The conference is large enough to encompass all the disciplines that make contributions to the study of aging, but intimate enough to allow one-on-one discussions. ABOUT THIS YEAR’S CONFERENCE
Join us for the 34th annual Ohio Association of Gerontology and Education conference to be held this year at Kent State University located in Kent, Ohio. OAGE and Kent State have joined together to host this year’s conference Bridging Gerontological Research & Practice: The State of Translational Research in Ohio. This theme encourages appreciation of how gerontological researchers and practitioners in our state work jointly to improve the well-being of older Ohioans. The conference will take place on Friday, March 26, 2010 at the Student Center on the main campus of Kent State University.
The Ohio Association of Gerontology and Education and Kent State University are pleased to bring you Dr. Paula Hartman-Stein to present a half-day workshop for health care professionals working with older adults.
This preconference workshop is slated for Thursday, March 25,2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Kent State University in the Student Center, Room 313. The title is “combining guided reminiscence and meditative practice in groups with older adults: A recipe for enhancing mood and memories”. CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS
The keynote speaker will be Steven H. Zarit, Ph.D. Professor and Head of the Department of Human Development & Family Studies at Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Zarit is internationally known for his applied research on family caregiving for the elderly; health and functioning of the oldest old; development of prevention and treatment programs for mental health problems in later life; and cross-national comparisons of old age care systems.
A plenary session moderated by Ohio Department of Aging Director, Barbara E. Riley, will examine the state of translational research in Ohio as discussed by panel members Senator Capri Cafaro (Ohio State Senate); Sonia Alemagno, Ph.D. (Interim Dean, KSU College of Public Health, and Richard Browdie (President/CEO of the Benjamin Rose Institute).
Individual papers, posters, symposia, workshops, and roundtable discussions will also be featured at the conference.
A special poster section will be devoted to presentations responding to the call for BOLD IDEAS generated by the Aging Matters Initiative that began at last year’s OAGE conference to recognize individuals who are "thinking outside of the box" when it comes to research/projects/programs that are relevant to aging.
ABSTRACT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Deadline: January 15, 2010
Acceptable formats include papers, workshops, symposia, and posters. Paper presentations will be grouped with similar topics, with 10-12 minutes allotted to each presenter. Symposia (comprised of 3-4 members) and interactive workshops will be restricted to one hour. Abstracts based on best practice, empirical research, policy analysis, theoretical ideas, innovative programs, and/or conceptually original literature reviews are welcome. Submissions related to the conference theme are encouraged.

BODY OF ABSTRACT (Text limited to 200-250 words)
"GO BOLD" session submissions should specifically address the question "If our success is completely guaranteed, what bold steps will be choose to move aging education, research, and services forward in Ohio?" by including a description of how your submission is relevant to researchers/practitioners/other stakeholders.
An email confirmation will be sent upon receipt of your abstract. If you do not receive a confirmation within 5 working days of submission, please contact Penny Lovett at the Ohio Association of Area Agencies on Aging (614). 481-3511. NOTE: Presenters must register and pay conference fees by March 5, 2010.
STUDENT AWARDS
Cash awards will be given for the outstanding student paper in each of the following categories:
• Jerome Kaplan Award for best graduate student paper
• Arnedia Smith Award for best undergraduate student paper
• Outstanding Student Paper on conference theme
Papers and posters may be created specifically for the conference or may be a modification of current work such as a class paper, project, thesis, or dissertation. Students whose abstracts are accepted for presentation and who wish to be considered for the cash awards must submit the final paper by March 1, 2010. If a student wishes a poster to be considered, a paper must be submitted based on the poster.
