Awards & Recognition

General Information

  1. Nominations are to be made only by an OAGE member.
  2. The nominee should have both a two-year minimum Ohio continuous residence and two-year minimum continuous Ohio education and/or research related appointment.
  3. A vita which shows research and/or educational activities conducted in Ohio and/or research on Ohio programs is a submission requisite. Nominations should show a significant contribution to the field of gerontology as evidenced by publications, teaching or research programs. Mentoring of future researchers/educators/practices and interdisciplinary work with colleagues nationally and internationally may also be discussed in the nomination. Development or leadership of educational programs may be included for the Educator Award.
  4. Nominations, including vita, are due March 5th, unless advertised otherwise.
  5. Each nomination should include a brief statement of support by an OAGE member for the nominee.
  6. The Awardee is expected to be in attendance to receive the OAGE Gerontology Educator Award and the OAGE Researcher Award. It is custom for the Awardees to present at the next year's annual conference.
  7. Former awardees may be asked to review nomination by the Awards Committee.

Notations:

  1. The Nominations for The Outstanding Educator and The Outstanding Researcher of the Year Awards may only be made by an OAGE member.  The Award Committee reports to the OAGE Board which then votes.  (See other criteria attached.)
  2. The Lifetime Achievement Award of OAGE nominations may only be made by an OAGE member.  The OAGE Awards Committee processes nominations with a vote by the OAGE Board on the Committee recommendation.  Unlike other awards, this is a special occasion, periodic recognition.
  3. The Jerome Kaplan graduate and Arnedia Smith undergraduate outstanding paper honors  are processed by that year’s Annual Conference OAGE Committee structure and selected by the Student Section Leadership.     
  4. ODA recognizes the names of those honored for the following awards through plaques in the state office.
    • The Outstanding Gerontology Educator of the Year
    • The Outstanding Gerontology Researcher of the Year
    • The Dr. Jerome Kaplan Best Graduate Paper of the Year
    • The Arnedia Smith Best Undergraduate Paper of the Year
    • The Practitioner of the Year
