Message from the President

OAGE President

From the President

We had a wonderful conference at Kent State University on March 26! Dr. Steven Zarit from Penn State gave the Keynote Address and we plan to have it available here on the web site shortly. We will also be able to share some of the other sessions here, too.

Thanks to our conference committee for all their hard work: Dr. Greg Smith, Dr. Kelly Cichy, and Jeanne McKinley from Kent State, Dr. Harvey Sterns from the University of Akron, and Dr. Daniel Van Dussen from Youngstown State University. They worked for over a year planning, coordinating, reviewing, and organizing this conference. My deepest appreciation for all their efforts.

At the conference, we honored several individuals. Joe Ruby has served since 1981 as President and CEO of the Area Agency on Aging, 10B, Inc. He has been a true leader here in Ohio and nationally. We presented him with a lifetime achievement award. We honored Dr. Ray Matura from Rio Grande University as Educator of the Year, Dr. David Bass from Benjamin Rose Institute as Researcher of the Year, and Dr. Paula Hartman-Stein as Practitioner of the Year. Myra Carter from Ohio University won the prize for the best undergraduate paper and Pam Falkenberg from Youngstown State University was given an honorable mention. Anna Rahman from Miami University won the prize for the best paper on the conference theme and Noelle Fields from the Ohio State University won for the best graduate student paper and Allison Gibson, also from OSU, received honorable mention. Finally we were fortunate to have Kim Kaplan join us as we honored her late father, Dr. Jerome Kaplan, one of the founders of our organization and a nationally recognized leader in the field of aging.

To those who attended, your registration included a year’s membership in OAGE. I hope that you and our other members will become active members and help our organization to grow in the coming year. We need your support to help aging advance in Ohio!

As always, if you have questions or concerns about OAGE, please contact me at teaford.1@osu.edu.

Sincerely,
Meg Teaford
