There are seven openings on the OAGE Board of Trustees, four regular members and three student members.  The slate of Board candidates appears below, followed by a brief biography of each candidate. In addition, there are two openings for OAGE officers; the slate of officer candidates also appears below.  To participate in the election, members must cast their vote by placing an “X” on the line (below the slate), and send to Penny Lovett at the email address below. IN ORDER FOR YOUR VOTE TO BE COUNTED, WE MUST RECEIVE IT BY MARCH 7, 2010.  A list of the current Board of Trustee members is posted on the OAGE web site at http://www.oage.org/docs/OAGE_BoardTrustees.doc

Robert Applebaum, PhD, Professor in the Department of Sociology and Gerontology and Director of the Ohio Long-Term Care Project at the Scripps Gerontology Center, Miami University, Oxford
He holds degrees from Ohio University (BA), the Ohio State University (MSW), and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (PhD). He has been involved in the development and evaluation of long-term care programs across the United States for more than two decades. He has been a frequent speaker at national and state conferences on long-term care. He has authored more than 75 articles and monographs, and four books on long-term care and has made more than 375 professional presentations at state and national conferences. In his time at Maimi he has been a Principal Investigator on more than 4$ million in externally funded grants. Dr. Applebaum has been active in serving the Gerontological Society of America and the American Society on Aging. He has chaired the Social Research Planning and Practice Section of the Gerontological Society and has been a member of the Board of Directors of the American Society on Aging and Chair of the Editorial Board for the Society’s journal, Generations.

Krystal Culler, BA, Graduate Student at Youngstown State University and the University of Akron
Krystal is working on her MA of Science, Applied Behavior Analysis degree at Youngstown State University (YSU) and her Graduate Certificate in Gerontology at the University of Akron. She is Secretary of the Emerging Scholar and Professional Organization of the Gerontological Society of America and member of the Golden Key International Honour Society, YSU Chapter. She also received the 2008 OAGE Arnedia Smith Award for Best Undergraduate Paper. Her gerontology research interests include life course planning with autism and developmental disability and family dynamics of caregiving.

Malinda Deacon, RN, MHA, Education Director, Ohio Assisted Living Association
Malinda is a Registered Nurse and licensed Nursing Home Administrator.  She is a part-time student in the PhD program in Social Gerontology at Miami University, where she was the coordinator for the Scripps 2007 Biennial Survey of Ohio Long-term Care Facilities and an instructor for GTY 154, Aging in American Society.  Malinda has a master’s degree in Health Administration from Ohio University, and previously worked as the Community Services Supervisor at the Area Agency on Aging in Mansfield, Ohio.  She is very interested in helping to connect research with practice.

Noelle Fields, MSW, Doctoral Student in the College of Social Work at The Ohio State University
Noelle is working on her PhD in social work at The Ohio State University (OSU), having received her MSW at Baylor University in 2004, where she was named MSW Intern of the Year. Past employment includes serving in clinical social work or therapist capacities at Mayfield Village Subacute and Rehabilitation Center and Senior Life Consultants in Columbus. She is Vice President of the Doctoral Student Organization in the OSU College of Social Work, and her gerontology research interests include family caregiving and elder abuse.

Jennifer M. Kinney, PhD, Professor of Gerontology in the Department of Sociology and Gerontology and a Research Fellow of the Scripps Gerontology Center, Miami University
She received her PhD in Psychology in 1987 from Kent State University. Her research efforts focus on the evaluation of programs to promote quality of life among individuals with dementia and the role that technology might play in facilitating the caregiving efforts of family members who care for a relative with dementia at home. Jennifer is a Fellow of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education and the Gerontological Society of America.

Jeanne McKinley, Graduate Student at Kent State University
She is a graduate student at Kent State University (KSU) and lives in Ashtabula.  She is completing her first year as a student Board member on OAGE and is helping to plan and implement the 2010 OAGE conference at KSU.

Gregory C. Smith, EdD, Professor, Gerontology, Human Development & Family Studies; Director, Human Development Center; Co-Director, Graduate Gerontology Certificate Program; Graduate Faculty Member, Department of Psychology
He has a doctorate in Human Development (Specialization in Psychology of Adult Development and Aging) from the University of Rochester, a master’s in Psychology from Villanova University, and a bachelor’s in Psychology from the State University of New York.  Since 2001, he has been Professor of Human Development, Family Studies, & Gerontology and Director of the Human Development Center at Kent State University. He also is on the Graduate Faculty in the Department of Psychology. He is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and Associate Editor of the International Journal of Aging and Human Development, and a peer reviewer on various National Institute of Health study sections. His primary research focus is on caregiving issues within aging families, and he has been the PI and Co-PI of studies funded by the National Institute on Aging, National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Institute of Nursing Research.
