World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is a global initiative established by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and supported by the World Health Organization at the United Nations. Its purpose is to raise awareness about the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults, highlighting the social, cultural, economic, and demographic factors that contribute to elder abuse. Elder abuse can include physical, emotional, financial, or sexual harm, as well as neglect, occurring in any relationship where trust is expected.
Importance
Elder abuse is a significant public health and human rights issue, affecting millions of older adults worldwide. Studies indicate that as many as 1 in 10 older Americans experience abuse or neglect each year, only 1 in 14 cases of elder abuse ever come to authorities’ attention. yet only a small fraction of cases are reported. Observances like WEAAD aim to break the taboo surrounding elder abuse, encourage reporting, and foster a culture of respect and protection for older adults.
